Local MP Joins Tapestry’s Play In The Everyday Family Event

Tapestry hosted Play In The Everyday, a community play event in Lewes, in partnership with playworker and content creator Amber Ogunsanya-William (Playworkeramber). The day was packed with activities for local families, from mask making and tote bag designing to puppet shows and stilt walkers – and caught the attention of James MacCleary, then MP for Lewes, who attended with one of his children.

MacCleary, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Early Education and Childcare, praised the event and the value of local businesses supporting play. “We need more” initiatives like it, he said, calling the day “buzzing.” Local parent Sam Beech echoed the sentiment, describing an atmosphere full of “fun, imagination and play.”

The puppet show in particular, run by local entertainers WishWorks, was a resounding success, with several of the children taking part in their performance. There were definitely some budding actors on the stage!

The event was generously supported by a host of sponsors, including YPO (family goodie bags), Wicksteed (a ‘springy horse’), the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (books for every child), and edtech publisher Twinkl, who supported activities throughout the day.

For Amber Ogunsanya-William, whose own childhood in Tower Hamlets was shaped by growing up on her father’s adventure playground, hosting the event was personal. She described it as central to her ongoing mission of “championing children’s right to play.”

The day also gave families a first glimpse of Play In The Everyday – six animated mini-films about finding play in everyday moments, whether that’s on the bus, in a queue, or while out shopping. “Everyone loved the Play In The Everyday animated films,” said Dr Helen Edwards, Tapestry co-founder, adding that the team can’t wait to share them more widely.

An example Reflection

The Early Years manager at Tapestry Primary School, Gabriel, has noticed issues with storing objects for loose parts play. He adds his thoughts to Tapestry as a reflection, and outlines what he hopes to achieve.

Tapestry Reflections are designed to be returned to as many times as needed – Gabriel, Katie and Jules can keep adding comments, and report on the impact once everything has come together!

Tapestry Reflections

The Reflections area of Tapestry is a structured, staff-only space for understanding the impact of your provision. Using Bespoke Frameworks

Build your own curriculum using a CSV file, ready to import into Tapestry. You can create your own areas, aspects, statements and scales, organise them into a structure that suits your setting, and assess against them in observations.

Using Flags

Flags allow you to label an observation with specific points of reference, such as the EYFS areas, celebrations, or custom flags you have created. Once applied, these flags can be viewed and filtered for a specific child, or the whole setting, helping you quickly locate relevant observations.

Using the Areas of Concern Screen

The Areas of Concern screen gives you one place to note where a child may need more support across the EYFS areas.
